Head Coach Dan Quinn is disappointed but unwavering in his optimism for the season. While their talents will be missed, the Falcons are still a competitive football team. With the team’s third preseason game coming against Miami this week, Matt Ryan and Julio Jones will likely play half of the game, as this portion of preseason is seen as “dress rehearsal”.
With stars like Ryan and Jones having already locked up starting spots, many others are still fighting for their spots on the depth chart. Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman still have to battle out the starting running back position as they both missed the first two scrimmages. With a running game that has not yet picked up this summer, their presence will be important in Miami.
Minor injuries that have plagued the defense with William Moore, Desmond Trufant, and Ra’Shede Hageman will likely hold them back from participating in the early exhibition games. Getting their starting defense healthy for week 1 is top priority for the unit.
Roddy White will undergo minor arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow to alleviate swelling that occurred last week. His condition should not be an issue come September 14 and the season opener vs. the Eagles.
Injuries are a part of football and each team’s ability to handle them will make or break their playoff hopes. Being tested so early may prove to be beneficial for the Atlanta Falcons.
